An aspiring Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) must complete a state-approved training program, often in the form of a diploma, certificate or associate degree. The majority of programs can be completed in one year.

General Practitioner

General Practitioners (GP) are typically the primary medical doctor one gets in touch with.

They typically start with a relevant bachelor’s degree, then get into med school (for about 4 years), followed by a three-year residency program.

GP’s earn at average $201,100 per year*. Projected growth until 2028 is faster than average (7% to 10%)*.

Lab Technician

Laboratory Technicians collect samples and perform tests to analyze body fluids, tissue, and other substances. They are pivotal with crises like the corona virus in examining blood samples, testing whether people are infected or not.

They would need an Associate’s degree, e.g. Clinical Laboratory Science. Their average pay is $52,330 per year*, and their employment is projected to grow 11 percent to 2028*, much faster than the average of all jobs.

Virologist

Virologists, or Microbiologists study microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, algae, fungi, and some types of parasites. They are playing important roles in understanding the corona virus, and finding ways to cure it.

Their education would typically be a bachelor’s degree in Microbiology. They earn at average $71,650 per year*. Employment of microbiologists is projected to grow 5 percent to 2028*.
